Testing:
As previously announced the Archdiocesan Office of Catholic Schools has chosen the Stanford 10 as the standardized test for all its schools.  Similar to the CTBS this test is made up of two parts:  the Stanford 10 is a complete battery of reading, grammar, spelling, science, social studies and math.  The other part is the OLSAT (Otis Lennon School Ability Test) which is the cognitive abilities test.  Testing will take place the week of March 22 – 26, and the students will take Practice Tests the week of March 15.  By doing this each child will have a preview of the new style of the test. If you have a question please feel free to call or email me.

Did You Know:

  1. Thirty St. Bridget School staff members have recently taken a CPR course and are now certified.  Thank you to Sharon Zschuschen for our training and accommodating the many training dates.
  2. Third graders are working very hard on Washington D.C. for their State Fair Projects.  The students are learning about government and the monuments.  Also, they are progressing through the multiplication tables.  In science the third graders will soon be studying light and sound energy and conservation.
  3. From Mrs. Barrett: The 8th grade Spanish class is beginning a chapter on clothing. Once students learn the vocabulary for the chapter they will divide into partners or groups. One student will be the model and the other will be the MC.  Students love this project because they get to dress up and use their Spanish.

The 7th grade Spanish class has begun their chapter on food.  They will be doing a few mini-projects such as designing their own restaurants and menus. We will end the unit with a Spanish fiesta.

The 6th grade Religion class has been working on the Stations of the Cross. They have been talking about self-discipline as our theme of the month.  In addition we have been discussing the topics of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving in Lent.

In 6th grade Spanish the class began to talk about members of the family.  They have used riddles to figure out the correct family member.  Students will be working on making their family trees.

  1. From Ms. Fannon: Marta Pysak (Gr 8) gave a presentation to grade 7 about her homeland, Ukraine.  Since the students were studying Eastern Europe, specifically, Ukraine, she taught the students a great deal.

Grade 6 just finished Ancient India and will begin a new book to get ready for the Middle Ages.

Grade 7 will present their projects on Eastern Europe.  Each student took a different country to research.

Grade 8 will begin studying World War I in Social Studies.  They will write a class newspaper during this unit.

Grade 8 English class is reading The Hobbit and enjoying writing cause/effect essays, and persuasive essays that they will integrate with the novel.  The class newspaper in Social Studies will be integrated with the writing in English.

  1. The K1 Class is looking forward to welcoming visitors to New York State. They have   been working hard making many projects about The Empire State. One special project was decorating T shirts with the emblems of all the sports teams, especially the World Champion NY Yankees. There will lots of other interesting things to see.

Of course, the children are learning our letters and talking about Lent and Easter. They are busy, busy, busy-----

  1. Second graders are preparing for a trip to Alaska!  The children are researching the geographical and cultural history of the state, they will also be preparing some delicious Alaskan treats!  In Math they will be working on the concept of subtraction with re-grouping and in Religion the children continue to prepare for First Holy Communion.
  1. From Mrs. Zschuschen:  Middle School Science students are busy with last minute touches to their Science Fair entries. The cleverness of some of the student ideas is truly amazing. Please try to find time on March 18th to come and see the projects. Students will be glad to explain all that they have discovered in their explorations.
  2. From Mrs. Karasch: The Middle School will be celebrating Pi Day (3/14) (3.14159….)

On Monday March 15th since the 14th is a Sunday. They will be doing activities related to pi and then eat pies before the end of the day.

  1. From Mrs. Trombino: Sixth grade has just finished enjoying The Cay, by Theodore Taylor.  Students used Taylor’s very descriptive style of writing to create sketches of the island, and they created word webs of nouns and adjectives describing the tempest that happens in the story.

In seventh grade language arts, students are thoroughly enjoying Where the Red Fern Grows.  The author does a wonderful job bringing the reader into life in the Ozarks, and it is very easy to feel as thought you know the main character, ever  after just a few chapters.

Eighth grade religion students are finishing up the second unit in their religion  text, which brings us through the Renaissance and into the Reformation.  In
addition, Eighth grade is preparing to lead the Holy Thursday prayer service  during Holy Week.

  1. In Social Studies the fourth grade is working on a Massachusetts unit.  They will be making clay maps, learning about cranberries, and so much more.

Our school days just seem to “fly by” as we are busy each and every moment of the day. On March 1st we began our third trimester and from now until June our year will truly be  very busy. Your children are naturally curious and we strive to “raise the bar” to keep them actively engaged in learning.

I pray that God will sustain you on your Lenten journey and make your Easter more glorious.

God Bless You,

Mrs.
Roseanne Mungovan

Principal
