Principal's May, 2008 Letter

May 5, 2008

May 5, 2008

 Dear Parents:

“O Mary We Crown You With Blossoms Today, Queen of the Angels, Queen of the May”

Mary, our Blessed Mother, was crowned by Rachel-Marie Rzeznik (GR 8) at our outdoor grotto on May 1st in the presence of the entire student body.  Our second grade First Communicants presented flowers as we sang tributes to Mary and recited a decade of the rosary.  Please stop to say a prayer to this beautiful lady when you come to school.

Each day during the month of May our students recite the Memorare during morning prayer and a decade of the rosary during their religion class time. St. Bridget School strives to instill Catholic tradition and values in each student knowing that this continues at home.  Thank you for sending your child to a Catholic school.

Our April Multicultural Fair was a huge success. I hope you were able to visit and have your passport stamped in each country.  We had lots of fun preparing for this day and were pleased to see so many parents and friends.

Also in April our middle school students spent all day April 16th at our very first Health Fair.  Our two nurses, Mrs. Kane and Mrs. Connolly, coordinated the entire day.  Students were kept busy in their homeroom as well as in the school hall.  Included were peer leaders from Framingham High School(diversity) and Framingham State College (nutrition), speakers discussing suicide prevention (Samaritans), eating disorders, and also a speaker from the American Lung Association (smoking).  The students created their own pizzas with Mrs. Zschuschen, learned some hip-hop dance steps, and took part in a sports challenge.   All agreed it was a day well spent - lots of fun and lots of important information.

Our school year continues to “wind down”.  There are just six busy weeks remaining in the 2007-2008 school year.  As noted in the memo, our last day will be on Friday, June 13th with dismissal at 11:00 am.

This summer a new fire alarm system will be installed at our school.  The present system is 50 years old, continues to work, but needs to be retired.  Workmen will begin work in the PRC on Monday, June 9th and in the school on Monday, June 16th. Because this is a project that takes several weeks, our starting dates for the 2008-2009 school year will be after Labor Day.  This will allow for any installation delays and for the system to be tested by the installers and the Framingham Fire Department.

Good News:
A fifth grade student, Caroline R, received Honorable Mention in the Massachusetts Science Poetry Contest.  All St. Bridget fifth graders submitted poetry written after their trip to Nature’s Classroom.  Caroline received a green ribbon and certificate.  Congratulations to Caroline, her classmates, and teachers Mrs. Logue and Mrs. Heistand!

Did You Know:

  1. The fifth graders will be traveling back in time!  On May 12th they will be visiting the Freedom Trail in Boston to learn more about the very beginnings of our country.
  2. Our 8th graders visited Battleship Cove on April 29th to further enhance their study of World War II.  On May 19th they will travel to Boston for their Class Trip – this includes attending the Red Sox vs Kansas City game.
  3. The third grade is really “brightening up the place”.  As part of their energy unit in science the children have broken white light into its compound colors via refraction.  Mr. Dutile, a SBS parent, will be coming in this week to share his expertise about fuels used to generate electricity.
  4. Our scouts have been busy: While cleaning up litter on Singletary Lane, Elias G. found a wallet.  He, along with fellow scouts Max B. and Patrick D., turned it in to the police department in the hopes it would be returned to its rightful owner. Boys, thank you for doing the right thing!
  5. At a recent Bike Rodeo, Boy Scouts from Grade 8, Rob and Trevor, volunteered time to run the stations and teach the younger Cub Scouts about bike safety.
  6. Four boys from second grade, Patrick, Max, Elias and Aidan, earned their Wolf badges by completing 12 Achievements learning about healthy habits, safety at home, taking care of the community and their duty to God. Congratulations!
  7. Congratulations to our Student Counselors!  They received a lovely letter from the director of the Pathways Family Shelter on Edgell Road.  During the month of March they collected toiletries, baby items, and kitchen items.  The shelter was very grateful.  Thank you, students and parents, for living out the Christian spirit!
  8. Last Saturday, May 3rd, our second graders received their First Eucharist.  In science they are planting flowers and are looking forward to a field trip to the Museum of Science.
  9. 1B has been learning about facts and opinions.  They have been reading non-fiction books about animals and have chosen an animal to write about in their own non-fiction books.
  10.  The Kindergarten class has planted sunflower seeds, and is watching every day for sprouts.  The caterpillars are on order so the children can enjoy the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly.  They have lots of books and projects to go along with these science activities.  Their books are about to be published.  They have worked very hard on these and can't wait to see the finished project.  In Math, the students are making clocks to learn how to tell time and they will learn about our Blessed Mother and the Rosary in the month of May.
  11.  Seeds, flowers, and insects, will all be part of  K1’s science themes during May. The children are also working on a "secret" project for a very special person in their lives. For Mary's month, they are learning to pray the rosary. We are also counting down to the last day of school.

Parents, thank you with being so prompt with re-registration.  This allows me more time to plan for the 2008-2009 school year: class size, supplies, teacher needs, number of textbooks etc.etc.

 Enjoy this beautiful spring!

God Bless You,
Mrs. Roseanne Mungovan
Principal
