Oct 5 , 2009

Dear Parents:

St. Bridget School is off to a great start to the 2009-2010 school year!

The children have settled into their daily routines and are enriched by the wonderful guidance of the professionals who teach them each day.  Our Open Houses on September 21st and 22nd were well attended.  Thank you for coming to see, listen, and learn how your child will be challenged this year at his/her grade level.  The faculty and I welcome all comments.  Please feel free to let us know your thoughts and ideas as we progress through this year.  Remember, if you have a question or concern, please feel free to call or email me.  I will give you an honest answer.

Last June the staff of St. Bridget School chose to reinforce virtues as the focus for the 2009-2010 school year.  Each month one virtue will be featured in our school.  Student assemblies will be held and all our efforts will be made to impart a clearer understanding of what is expected daily.  Our schedule for this year is as follows:

                                             October         Responsibility
                                             November     Compassion
                                             December     Generosity
                                             January          Perseverance
                                             February        Citizenship
                                             March            Self-Discipline

April              Honesty
                                             May-June      Tolerance

October is the month of the Rosary.  Each day a decade of the rosary will be recited in religion class.

Did You Know:

  1. Our students have received several compliments from the priests while they are attending daily Mass.  Even some parishioners have been most complimentary as to their reverence and attentiveness.
  2. A St. Bridget graduate, Andrew Dowding, now a senior at Xaverian Brothers High School, has been named a National Merit Scholar.  His score on the PSAT Exam was among the top 50,000 out of over 1.5 million taking the exam.  We are proud! Congratulations!!!!
  3. KB and KM celebrated Johnny Appleseed’s birthday with many different activities.  They tasted different apple products including 3 types of apples, apple juice, and apple sauce.  They sequenced how apple trees grow and put paper apples in size order.  They looked at the different parts of an apple and made apple crowns of their favorite apple. They learned an apple tree poem, made apple prints, and painted apple trees.  They also made “stained glass” apples for the windows.
  4. Grade three is very busy.   They will soon begin a literature unit using the book Charlotte’s Web. In Social Studies the children have begun a unit on the Pilgrims and Plimoth Plantation which will culminate with a trip to Plimoth Plantation, The Mayflower, and the Wampanoag living museum. In math, third graders have learned expanded notation and how to round numbers, and the children are studying Force for their first science unit.
  5. From Ms Fannon: Grade 8 just finished an in-depth study of the American Revolution culminating with projects they shared with the class.

Grade 7 has completed studying the geography and history of Latin America and shared projects with the class.
Grade 6 completed studying the Fertile Crescent and shared their projects with the class. All these projects are on display in room 15 and you are all invited to stop by and see them.

The outside reading for grade 8 for September was realistic fiction and there are book reports and mobiles on display.  They also completed reading their first novel about the American Revolution entitled:  My Brother Sam is Dead. which integrated their English lessons and social studies.

6.   First graders will be going to Drumlin Farms for a Soil Investigation this month.  The children will conduct a pumpkin investigation  where they will watch how long it takes a green pumpkin to turn orange.  They will compare how much pumpkins weigh and many seeds are inside.

A new book study will begin. (This unit is still in the planning stages but will probably be legends or fairy tales from around the world.)

In Math – Students will begin ‘Math Minutes’ this month to help them learn addition facts. In Language Arts – The class just began the ‘Treasure Box’ program where students take home a small treasure to remind them about a story read in school. The treasure helps children retell the story to their family.

      7.   Mrs. Logue’s 5th grade Science Class has been very busy.  They’ve learned observing nature requires perspective and have been sorting and categorizing items. The students completed a really cool activity where they made “Nature Photographs” using the sun!

5L learned about the parts of plant and animal cells with Jello models which they got to eat! Yum!!!! Now that’s a way to have your lesson stick with you!!!

      8.   The 2nd grade classrooms are busy working hard!  Students have been reviewing 1st grade skills, working in literacy and math centers, and writing workshop.  In October they look forward to Pumpkin Math Day and a field trip to George Hill Orchards for a fun day of apple related activities.

      9.  In 4A and 4H the students are studying plants in science.  Last Friday, they had a lab to observe the parts of the flowers, both inside and out.  They used fresh flowers to find the  various parts that make up a plant.

    10. 6th grade Religion- created skits (tv broadcasts) in class explaining how God reveals himself to us everyday.

6th grade Spanish- Students have chosen a famous Hispanic person or Spanish–speaking place in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.

7th grade Religion- Students created billboards “How Do I Know God is Present in my Life” to show how God reveals himself to them.

7th   Spanish- Students have been learning numbers, days of the week, months of the year, dates, colors, and are now working on telling time.

8th grade Spanish- Students have been studying about the members of the family and will be working on creating their family trees.

11.   MS Science News: Grade 6 has just completed a study of all the ways we measure and find locations on the Earth’s surface. The students made clever contour maps to demonstrate their understanding of topography.

Grade 7 has been studying the skeletal and muscular systems of the body. They can recite the scientific names of the major bones of the body. A short lab on how our skin breathes showed them the importance of sweat in keeping us cool.

Grade 8 is now expert in the measurement of motion and how we calculate acceleration of a moving object. Labs on reaction time showed the differences between them and their classmates in ability to react to unexpected stimuli.

12.    The K1 Class has been learning about the season of fall. We talked about the life cycle of an apple, why leaves change colors, and the children are collecting items from their  nature walks at home for their Nature Bags. They are enjoying sharing them with their  classmates. In Oct. they will be talking about the harvest, pumpkins, hibernation and of course Halloween.
