Principal's March, 2008 Letter

March 3, 2008

Dear Parents:

March is here and with it comes the hope of springtime and the New Life of Easter.  We have had such a difficult winter with snow, cold, and ice that thoughts of warmth are very enticing.  Our Lenten journey continues for another three weeks as we work to prepare our children for the passion and death of Our Lord and His rising from the dead on Easter.  All grades will experience the Stations of the Cross, either in our school chapel or in St. Bridget Church, and Grades 2-8 will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We are doing all we can to prepare for Easter, and I ask that you, their parents, continue this journey and bring your children to Holy Week services.

Today, March 3rd, is the start of our third trimester – we have completed two-thirds of our school year.  Can you believe it????   Report cards will be mailed home on March 13th .

Also, in March, we will begin our re-registration for the 2008-2009 school year. All materials will be mailed to you on March 14th and must be returned with re-registration fees on or before April 17th.  I realize this is an earlier time frame but our budgeting process is long and is dependent on the number of students attending our school.  I ask that you make note of these dates and mark your calendar.  If your child is not returning to St. Bridget School I would appreciate a note addressed to me. Thank you.

Good News:

  1. St. John’s High School in Shrewsbury ran a full page add in the Metro West and Worcester Telegram newspapers touting their AP Scholars program as being one of the top 10 in Massachusetts.  Two of the students named were St. Bridget graduates: Michael Ronan and Nathaniel Pomeroy.  We are proud and send our congratulations!

 Did You Know:

  1. Grade 8 news: The students wrote and edited a newspaper “The Eighth Grade Tribune”; last week the students participated in a chastity course offered by the Archdiocesan Respect for Life office; Mrs. Jen Ryan, an attorney, discussed the “ethics” of their current novel To Kill a Mockingbird; Father John Vidmar, a teacher at Providence College, spoke to grade 8 on the Civil War.
  2. Each third grader will be presenting a living biography to his/her classmates the last week in March.  To prepare for this event the children have to read a biography and take notes on the important details.  Then each child will dress up as their famous person and present a summary of that person's life to the class.
  3. The 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Spanish classes will be preparing for the upcoming Multicultural Day in April.  The 6th grade will be focusing on the Incas and their ancient civilization. The 7th grade will be working on modern day Peru, landmarks, history, maps, flag, people and their customs,etc.... and the 8th grade will be discussing Peruvian cuisine.
  4. In Math, the K1 Class worked with pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters to discover their values. Using magnifying glasses, the children closely examined each coin to find out whose image is on each coin and the mint date. They all enjoyed using real money and when finished with the lessons, the coins were donated to our school's Coin Drive. Winning a prize would be a great way to top off the unit on coins!
  5. Fourth grade just completed the American Dream project, creating a new American Landmark to represent the American Dream.  Also, they engaged in a Massachusetts Scavenger Hunt and created a poster displaying their findings.
  6. Three of our eighth grade girls, Taylor Sager, Monica Hanley, Katherine Osborn and sixth grader Meghan Osborn attended a Girl Scout event in London, England over February vacation.
  7. The first grade class celebrated the 100th day of school with a variety of activities.  They worked in small groups to put 100 piece puzzles together.  The class made 100 hearts with ways to tell someone you care about them and they ended the day by making a necklace with 100 Fruit Loops.
  8. Both first grades have been learning how to be good citizens.  They have discussed the importance of laws and rules and how to get along with others. They have also read about good citizens such as George Washington, Abe Lincoln, Susan B. Anthony, Martin Luther King Jr., and Ruby Bridges.

Parents, our school is in need of copy paper (8 ½ X 11).  Before I order, if anyone would like to donate a box or just a ream, the teachers and I would appreciate it.  If your company is designing a new logo, or changing address perhaps you might consider letting us make use of the “old” letterhead.  I thank you in advance.

New chairs for the school hall arrived last Saturday.  These 280 chairs were purchased through a grant from the Framingham Co-operative Savings Bank Education Fund and the St. Bridget PTO.  I wish to offer a special thank you to Mike Gore for procuring the grant and to Dave Dykeman for ordering them at a discounted price.

Our PTO is sponsoring two Open Houses on Sunday, March 30 from
10:00 am - 2:00pm and again on Monday, March 31 from 9:00 – 11:00 am. Please tell your friends and neighbors to visit us after Mass on Sunday or during our school day on Monday.  I have flyers available to be put up in all public places – please help by posting them.  Call, or stop by Mrs. Feeney’s desk to get a few to disburse.  I will also have them available at Wednesday evening’s PTO meeting.  Thank you for all you do each day to support and enrich our wonderful school.

God Bless You,
Mrs. Roseanne Mungovan
Principal
