Principal's April, 2008 Letter

April, 2008

Alleluia!  Alleluia!  Christ is Risen!

Dear Parents:

The beautiful month of April is upon us and with it comes the beginnings of new life and springtime.  Hopefully, we’ve seen the last of snow and our crocus, daffodils, jonquils, and tulips can push their way to the surface for all to admire.  It’s amazing how Springtime makes everyone feel better!

April is a very busy month at St. Bridget School.  We have begun to re-register our students for the 2008-2009 school year.  I hope by now everyone has received their re-registration packets in the mail (mailed March 14th).  If you cannot meet the April 17th deadline please phone Simone (508 875-5959) or send me a note if your child is not returning to St. Bridget School.  Remember: if we have not heard from you by April 17th, your child/ren will be put on a waiting list until class size is determined.

 Also, in April:

April 4th and 5th our Middle School presents the comedy Chickenheart.  The students have been rehearsing for several weeks under the direction of Mrs. Bruce and Mrs. Buckley.  Please come and enjoy!!
April 11th is our Multicultural Fair from 12:45 – 1:45   Last year we had a wonderful response from parents so mark your calendars!
Come One!  Come All!
April 16th we are hosting a Health Fair for our Middle School students.  For an entire day our 6th – 7th - 8th graders will participate in several different workshops either in the school hall or classroom.  Topics include nutrition, discrimination, suicide prevention, healthy living, sports injury prevention and sportsmanship, self-esteem, etc.  Thank you to Mrs. Kane and Mrs. Connolly for introducing these topics to the students and coordinating the speakers and schedule.

Did You Know:
  1. Five of our Middle School students, Cameron Marion, Cameron Bernstein, Christopher Pirozzi, Sydney Fonseca and Maria Schwab, attended an all day Peer Leadership workshop at Boston College.  With Mrs. Barrett as their chaperone, the students set a school goal – different lunch choices.  The students have since held meetings with the principal, the nurse, Mrs. Barrett, Mrs. Zschuschen and Mrs. Walsh to look for viable options.  Last week all students in Grades 1-8 were surveyed as to possible choices –details will be forthcoming.
  2. In the March issue of the Marion (High School) Clarion two of the four students chosen as “Students of the Term” were St. Bridget graduates.  Congratulations to sophomore Mary Hazen and junior Lindsay Garrahan.  Thank you for making us proud!
  3.  On April 13th four of the Paul Elfman music students at St. Bridget School will participate in their annual Catholic Schools’ Honor Band.  Congratulations to Corrine Michaud, McKenzie Sparling, Valerie Enge and Rachel-Marie Rzeznik.
  4. In science, the K1 Class has been learning about the parts of plants and flowers and how each part helps the plants grow. Although Spring has just begun, the science table has a variety of blooming plants and flowers. The children use magnifying glasses to examine the roots, leaves, and stems of the plants.
  5. On April 2nd the students in Grade 7 will host a Caribbean Fiesta in the school hall. This culminates their study of the diverse cultures of the Caribbean Islands.
  6. Our eighth graders will head to Battleship Cove in Fall River, MA on April 29th to explore the USS Massachusetts to enhance their study of World War II.
  7. Our Kindergarteners have learned a lot about the new food pyramid and good nutrition in their science class.  Spring has sprung in their room!  The children will be learning about seeds and plants, as well as the life cycle of a butterfly.  Each child in the class is writing a book to be published in hard cover!!!
  8. Our students are always complimented on their respective field trips. Docents/guides often thank the students for their good behavior, subject knowledge, and articulate questions.  Thought you’d like to know!
  9. With money from the Square One Art program Mrs. Withee has chosen to purchase bell chimes for student use in the music room.
  10. Third grade news: Hi Mates, will you be attending the multicultural fair?  Third grade is hoping to see you there.  The children have been learning about Australia and would love to share their new-found knowledge with you.  Third grade science is really "heating up" as well.  The students have started our new unit about energy by learning about insulators and conductors.  The children will even make their own insulated box to see which materials will keep water the warmest.  Their choices were cellophane, cotton cloth, wax paper, and aluminum foil. Which do you think will do the best job?
  11.  In Ms. Tomkins art class the children are involved in the following art projects for the upcoming Multicultural Fair:

1st graders are designing their very own clocks modeled after England’s "Big Ben".
2nd graders are making paper mosaic fish after looking at the Israeli tradition of stone work and mosaic art.
3rd grade has started to make images of Australian animals using the same techniques as the Aboriginal People.
4th grade is creating papier mache Japanese Daruma dolls that are made at the New Year and able to grant wishes.
5th grade is studying Poland, and have looked at many examples of Polish folk art and designs in Polish pottery.
6th grade is studying the French artist Paul Cezanne.  They observed and created their own still life drawings using pastels. They are also going to study metal work from Ancient Peruvian people in the next few weeks.
7th grade is studying Ancient Greek pottery in art class. The students studied and examined the different uses of Greek vases and containers and then began to draw their very own container using some of the same Ancient Greek patterns and colors.
8th graders are studying Taiwan and are designing art work from images of different historical locations such as Taipei 101 and Taiwan's national parks.

  1. Second Grade is starting their exploration of Israel through art projects, music, dance, learning Hebrew, and information about the culture and its people. The students are busy learning about fossils and dinosaurs in science and preparing for First Holy Communion in May.
  2. 1B has written stories about spring and their favorite things.  Their 7th grade buddies will be helping them type the stories and make them into a book.
  3. The first graders worked together to make Leprechaun traps.  They used a variety of materials including recyclable containers and a lot of shiny things.  Unfortunately, they did not capture a leprechaun in the classroom.  When they came to school on St. Patrick's Day they found some gold coins and green marshmallow rice crispy treats left by the elusive leprechaun.
  4.  Mrs. Murphy’s Fourth graders have just finished their own tall tales -- they had to invent a super human ability with an impossible situation and then save the day.  They are currently working on traditional haiku's 5-7-5; they've written three -- season, nature & an animal -- and illustrated one.  They are busy bees!

Our Middle School Science Fair was a very successful event on Wednesday, March 26th.  Our Middle School students amazed all who attended, not only with their projects, but with their oral presentations to the judges and all who stopped by. I wish to thank Mrs. Sharon Zschuschen, Gr 6-7-8 Science teacher, who has worked with the students for the past ten weeks and her coordination of this event.  A list of the winners appears in the March 31st weekly memo.

Our weeks and days in this third trimester are indeed very busy and fulfilling for our students.  We have lots of things planned and hope to enjoy our remaining time of this school year.  All our events are listed and I ask that you please join us – our door is always welcoming to parents.

Thank you for sending your child/ren to St. Bridget School.  If you ever have a question or concern do not hesitate to call me or send an email.  I am always willing to sit and listen.

God Bless You,
Mrs. Roseanne Mungovan
Principal
