Principal's Monthly Letter

December 3, 2007

Dear Parents/Guardians:

December has arrived! This wonderful, busy, exciting month is here for us to prepare. December 2nd, began the liturgical season of Advent – the time we prepare for the birth of the Christ Child on Christmas Day. This will be the focus for the students of St. Bridget School. The commercialism of the world around us makes it difficult for our children to see beyond the tinsel and bright lights. I ask that you help us to preserve the season of Advent as the time we wait for Jesus to be born. Christmas will be so much more meaningful if we Watch and Wait. Beginning Friday December 7th, and each Friday thereafter, our school community will gather at 8:00 am for a brief prayer service and to light our school Advent candle. Please join us!

This first week of Advent St. Bridget School will be hosting the Vocation Chalice. The Chalice will be displayed in our first floor hallway and we will pray each day for vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

December is a busy time here at St. Bridget School. Please note the following dates – all are open to you, the parents so please join us!

December 14 at 7:00 PM Grades 4&5 "The Light of the World" St. Bridget Church
December 15 Grades 3-4-5 Attending a Liturgical Dance performance at Boston College
December 19 at 1:00 PM Grades K – 3 "The Living Creche" St. Bridget School Hall
December 21 at 10:15 AM hosted by Gr 5 Advent Prayer Service St. Bridget Church

Two special events should be noted for Sunday, December 23rd.

Did You Know:
  1. Grade 8 went to Lowell Mills on November 28th and participated in a program called "Workers on Line" where they learned the process of working an assembly line. This field trip was the culminating activity for their social studies unit on the Industrial Revolution and the Language Arts unit on the novel Lyddie.
  2. Ms. Fannon reports that St. Bridget's Student Council will be making Christmas centerpieces for the elderly citizens at St. Patrick's Manor. Also, the Student Council will sponsor a holiday bake sale during lunch on December 12th.
  3. Along with concert preparation and the Liturgical dance field trip, the music room is always singing away!
  4. The fifth graders held their annual Thanksgiving breakfast on Wednesday, November 21st. Several parents were able to join the students for this academically based nutrition lesson. The food was blessed by Fr. Mike and enjoyed by all.
  5. On November 14th several of our middle school students assembled many, many bags of food for the Thanksgiving distribution. I congratulate and thank Michelle G, Rob and Valerie E, Jacob L, Matt M, Jonathan P, Tim R, Chris and Maria S.
  6. Kindergarten had a wonderful time making turkeys with their grandparents and special persons last month. They also made Pilgrim hats and Indian headdresses for their "feast" at snack-time. In December, the K students will be working on several Advent and Christmas projects, as well as practicing for our Christmas Pageant. We will be making some Christmas cards for the residents at St. Patrick's Manor in Framingham to make their Christmas more enjoyable. They will be working on their five senses with a Christmas "flavor".
  7. The first graders went on a field trip to Drumlin Farm to learn more about soil. Back at school, they did an experiment to see what type of materials a bean plant could grow in. We used rocks, sand and soil. The beans grew the best in the soil. To conclude their unit on rocks and soil, they made a volcano and then had it erupt. They also made some very colorful Thanksgiving turkeys for the shelter.
  8. The K1 Class helped Mrs. Mungovan lead the school in morning prayers. The class sang two songs, including the Our Father. The children did a wonderful job!
  9. The second graders will be having a Christmas party in December, focusing on food dishes from different parts of the world. Throughout the month of December they will also be learning how people all over the world celebrate with different customs.
CIA's for November:

Our Grandparents/Special Persons Day was a huge success. At 8:30 am our guests listened to the first graders sing praise to an "Awesome God", our second graders thanked them for being so special, and our third graders sang a special salute to our Veterans. We had visitors from Rhode Island, New York, Western Massachusetts, many of our neighboring towns, and as far away as Great Britain. It was such a wonderful day. Thank you for assisting your child in their preparations.

During Catholic Schools Week in January we will proudly begin the celebration of St. Bridget School's 50th anniversary. Our plan is to commence the celebration in January 2008 and conclude with a special Mass with Cardinal O'Malley on September 14th and then our anniversary gala on September 26th. Anne-Marie Gagnon, our Advancement Director, along with her co-chairs, Maureen Dutile and Kelly Caron, have been working tirelessly to assure a truly memorable celebration. We will honor the past, celebrate the present, and prepare for the future of St. Bridget School. Details will be forthcoming.

As our days get busier this month and all months I want you to know that I am here not only for the children, but for you, too. Each day I am in my office by 6:40 am. If you need to ask a question, express a concern, or share good news, please feel free to call me as I am always willing to listen.

On behalf of the staff of St. Bridget School I wish you a most holy and blessed Christmas and a prosperous and fruitful New Year.

God Bless You,

Mrs. Roseanne Mungovan
Principal
